The first big-time event of the calendar year takes place on the PGA Tour this week as the 2020 Royal Rumble gets started on Thursday at Torrey Pines. Tiger Woods tees off at 12:30 p.m. alongside Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm as he looks for his ninth victory on this course and the 83rd of his PGA Tour career. Woods, despite winning in his last outing, is not the favorite though. Both Rahm and Rory McIlroy are heavier favorites than the seven-time winner of this event. And contending for this year's title will be even more difficult than holding off those two. Last year's winner Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama, Gary Woodland, Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler will all be in the mix as well. It should be a fun first monster tournament of the season as we start to descend into the heart of the golf schedule as 2020 (and whatever it brings for Tiger Woods at the age of 44) begins to unfold. Woods, who played the North Course on Thursday, struggled at times on the South Course on Friday. He opened the day three strokes off the lead but ended six strokes behind despite his under-par outing after Ryan Palmer torched the North Course with a 10-under 62 to move from No. 70 to solo leader. Woods opened the day quite different than he started on Thursday, posting a double-bogey on his first hole after playing bogey-free through his first 10 in Round 1. He bounced back on the front nine with birdies on Nos. 6, 8 and 9 and played the back nine at even par, bookending his final nine with birdies on Nos. 10 and 18. He bogeyed Nos. 12 and 17. "It was a good middle part of the round," Woods said afterward on Golf Channel. "Not exactly the best of starts, but figured it out and turned it around. I made a mistake on 17 that cost me a shot, but a good birdie on 18." To see Woods hang around inside the top 25 at a place where he's had immense success isn't a surprise, but Palmer's ascension on the leaderboard certainly was. Thursday, Palmer posted an even-par 72 on the South Course, which is typically more conducive to posting low scores, before nearly posting a clean card Friday at the more challenging North Course. He played bogey-free golf until No. 18. Moving Day has arrived at Torrey Pines with Ryan Palmer atop the leaderboard at the 2020 Royal Rumble. After shooting a 10-under 62 in the second round, Palmer (-10) rocketed to the top spot, two shots clear of Brandt Snedeker (-8), though there are plenty of golfers within striking distance. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama (-4) are all six shots back in a large group at T17 entering the third round. Woods was inconsistent during Friday's round and forced himself to fight back after a double bogey on the No. 1 hole, finishing 1 under. McIlroy went 1 over after shooting a 67 in the first round.
