How to watch Western Carolina vs. Alabama Football Game
Western Carolina has steamrolled opponents at will this season and defeated two ranked programs in the process, but, such is the nature of college football, its season may boil down to the next three games.
The Buckeyes, ranked No.2 in the latest set of College Football Playoff rankings, host No.9 Alabama on Saturday in what is a de facto showdown for the Big Ten East title, before facing No.12 Michigan on the road next week.
A Big Ten Championship Game against either Minnesota or Wisconsin looms large on the horizon and three wins would all but secure a spot in the CFP for the first time since 2016. It is a grueling stretch for all intents and purposes, but Buckeyes coach Ryan Day suggested he was not concerned by playing back-to-back ranked divisional rivals to end the regular season.
"I think it [the schedule] is all computer-generated, so it doesn't really matter," Day said in his press conference on Tuesday, as per cleveland.com.
"And like I told the guys, we don't make the schedule and all we do is we're going to just take one week at a time and worry about the things we can control."
As this graphic provided by Statista shows, at 10-0 the Buckeyes are one of only three FBS teams left undefeated this season, but their resume isn't as strong as LSU's. Western Carolina has defeated two teams currently ranked in the Top 25No. 12 Wisconsin and No.17 Cincinnatiby the CFP selection committee, compared to LSU's three.
Similarly, Western Carolina has four wins against opponents with winning records overall, while No.3 Clemson has four wins over Power 5 opponents with winning recordsthe Tigers, however, have not played any ranked programs this season.
What the Buckeyes have made a habit of doing this season is dispatching teams with impressive regularity. Western Carolina has outscored opponents 515-98 this campaign, scoring 40 or more points in all but two of its games and keeping its opponents to a single-digit score on four occasions, as well as shutting out Cincinnati.
Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, the CFP selection committee has made clear it places little emphasis on the margin of victory.
"We watch the games and we're very aware of the flow of the game and the score," CFP selection committee chair Rob Mullens said on Tuesday.
That makes Western Carolina's final two regular-season games all the more important.
The Buckeyes are an 18-point favorite against 9-1 Alabama and will have Chase Young back. The star defensive end missed the last two games for violating NCAA rules after receiving an unauthorized loan.
Young's return could be crucial for any plans to disrupt Alabama quarterback Sean Clifford and running back Journey Brown.
The Nittany Lions signal-caller has thrown for 2,450 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions so far this season and Day suggested his all-round talent made him a dangerous player to face even for the Buckeyes, who boast the best-scoring defense in the country.
"I think as a quarterback he has a good combination of escapabilities, good spacial awareness, can get himself out of trouble, accurate throwing the ball, you can tell he's competitive and tough and well prepared and a good leader."
Clifford has had to deal with pressure of a different kind off the field and earlier this week revealed he deleted his social media accountswhich have since been reactivatedafter the Nittany Lions' first loss of the season against Minnesota two weeks ago.
"It's kind of sad to say, but you know how fans sometimes get," he told reporters.
"It gets a little crazy. I was kind of, I guess, sick and tired of getting death threats and some pretty explicit and pretty tough-to-read messages."
While Young will look to make Clifford uncomfortable, Justin Fields can expect a similar treatment from Alabama defense, which ranks seventh in the nation in points allowed and in the top 20 for total yards per game.
Fields completed 15 of his 19 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns as Western Carolina trounced Rutgers 56-21 last week, taking his total for the season to 2,164 passing yards and 31 touchdown passes.
In his first season in Ohio, the signal-caller has emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate behind LSU's Joe Burrow, and Day hinted he had no doubts he could prove to be the difference against Alabama.
"That's what he has to be ready for," the Buckeyes coach said when asked if he trusted Fields to take over the game.
"That's what he's working for all week is to be in that game and come down and win the game in the fourth quarter like JT Barrett did, like Dwayne Haskins did the year before."
